Can you believe that a peasant organization was formed for the first time in kerala in our tiny village? Yes, history says so. Mayyil, the land of peasant revolution was once the epicenter of India 's independence struggle. In 1934 Kerala Karshaka Sangham, took birth in our place Naniyoor Nambram. The great freedom fighters and social activists of our place were not people with a lot of fame and popularity, but the common man. You can picturise a common man struggling against all the odds and the harsh realities of life, working in the most adverse conditions to raise his family, but still he carries a fire within him to fight against the social evils prevailing in the society. That was picturesque of early days of Mayyil. Historical events like great bravery of

Kunhaakkama, a peasant mother during Kandakkai peasant revolution, Padikkunnu martyrdom, great leaders and social activists like Vishnu Bharatheeyan, Keraleeyan, Araakkal Kunhiraman, K.K. Kunhanathan Nambiar, Idoozhi Madhavan Nampoothiri and Subhramania Shenoy were all part of the driving force behind this social revolution.

During the independent struggle libraries were set up in each nook and corner of the region with an eye on educating the people. Primary school teachers who were knowledgeable about the events happening in the world scenario contributed much to this library movement. The common man who worked round the clock in agricultural and constructional sectors like slaves, were underpaid, dominated and suppressed by the landlords. Epidemics, Infectious diseases, Malnutrition, Famine, and Calamities made their life really miserable. To combat this they used books as their main weapon. New information gave them hope, relief and they started to unite slowly.

During this time conflicts and fights between landlords and the unprivileged was happening in all parts of the village. Mayyil, Kuttiyattor, Kolacherry were all under the region of Irikkur Farka. Peasant revolt against landlords and independence struggle against the British were unified in these places as both were for the same cause. A lot of known and unknown people sacrificed their life for virtues. So that was Mayyil once - A place which never compromised against social evils.

During the independence days Mayyil was not celebrating its freedom from the British Raj , but was boiling in severe conflicts that gave its great sons anguish. Due to this remarkable history we are very proud to say that our place remains a perfect icon of communal harmony and brotherhood.

Mayyil - General Information

Mayyil Grama panchayath is a special grade panchayath with a total dimension of 33.08 sq. km. Mayyil is located about 20 kms North east of Kannur Municipal area. Geographically this is a strategical place which has easy and separate access to different places of Kannur district such as Thaliparamba, Parassinikadavu, Chalode, Thalassery, Mattannur, Kuthuparamba, Iritty, Sreekandapuram, etc.

Mayyil Grama panchayath is in the Irikkur block division. The Thaluk headquarters is Thaliparamba. Mayyil Gramapanchayath falls under Thaliparamaba constituency. The Parliament constituency is Kasargod. Present M.P. Mr P. Karunakaran and M.L.A. Mr. C.K. P. Padmanabhan are both well known veteran social activists. The panchayath has 17 Grama panchayath ward divisions. The main villages are Mayyil and Kayaralam. The grama panchayath office is located in Mayyil town. Mr. A. Balakrishnan, a popular social worker, is currently heading the coveted post of President of the Grama panchayath.

As per the latest census currently panchayath is having a population of over 27700 and the female population outnumbered the male population by a figure 14,281 against 13,324.
